CHAPTER 12
We must be willing to let go of the life we have planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us.
E.M. FORSTER
Abby accomplished a great deal of writing during the next few days when rainy weather returned, as if it had only paused long enough to afford Elizabeth her debut as a model for Ryanâs family. Bolts of thunder and lightning flashed in the sky and kept everyone on their toes, but occasionally, the rain subsided into a drizzle before working into a frenzy again. She didnât see Jack on rainy days. Perhaps he huddled in his villa, writing, ordering room service. But she found herself watching for him around every corner.
When the sunshine reappeared after breakfast three days later, Abby went walking with the intention of spending time reading outdoors. Stuck on a chapter in her own manuscript agonizing her about how to proceed, she tucked an Emily Dickinson poetry book under her arm with a quilt and headed toward a meadow on the north side of the stables. She spread the blanket, then settled on her tummy, the book in her hand, ankles crossed and heels pointed upward. With stockings, a petticoat, and her long skirt billowing around her shins, she neednât worry about showing any skin.
She hadnât been there long when horse hooves approached from behind, causing her to look up and catch her breath, then chuckle. Jack rode toward her on a stallion. The rain had cooled the island considerably, and heâd donned his Sherlock disguise again.
âGood morning, Jack. Sweltering yet in that get-up?â Abby held her straw hat to her head as she smirked up at him, the brim doing a nice job of keeping the sunshine from her eyes.
Jack dismounted and tied the stallion to a tree trunk. âYouâre a sight for sore eyes, looking pretty as a rose in a garden.â
âThank you.â Abby smiled, her heart squeezing. âDonât ask how my writing is going since Iâm stuck, but howâs yours?â
âItâs going well.â He sat down on the quilt. âIâve started the mystery and finished some articles which may be fit for publication after some thorough rounds of editing, including Ryanâs article.â He sat cross-legged on the quilt and tossed his cloak within reach, withdrawing a pair of binoculars from a pocket. He held up the binoculars and peered through them to the southwest.
âAre you admiring the view or investigating a crime?â
âI never know what I will find on these nature rides. Stunning scenery, for starters.â Jack held the binoculars steady.
âMay I have a look?â She set the book aside and sat up, swinging her ankles together to her right. Then she smoothed her gown, ensuring she covered her ankles properly, chiding herself for not doing so when he arrived. He handed her the binoculars. She held them over her eyes and looked toward the southern side of Green Island. âI donât see anything except gorgeous pine, maple, and oak trees, but Lake George fairly shimmers today.â
âIf you look over this way, you can see the rear of the main house, the villas, and the stable.
